Fun Fact: hyenas do what they do because they evolved to fill the niche that dogs have in other areas. In the world of cats, there used to be no dogs. None whatsoever. Dogs originate in North America. So, the hyena filled the roll, since they originate in central Eurasia.
Their claws can't retract and are used for running, not for hunting. They hunt more like dogs, having adapted for endurance rather than for speed. They were the only dog-like canids on that land mass until the land bridge connected the Americas with Eurasia.

Funny enough (hyena laugher) … not in that way I already knew that Hyenas are closer to cats than dogs (along with some odder facts)
When I was a kid, these two were just the closest thing to a wolf Pokemon we had, in my eyes. I never really payed attention to the "hyena" in their names as they didn't look like hyenas at all. I still think they're closer to wolves or canine creatures in appearance, honestly.

I think Mightyena is based on both a wolf and a hyena. Hence Poochyena having “pooch” in its name. Idk if the Japanese name has a canine connection but it does here.

hyenas have a better hunting success rate than lions, and lions will steal from hyenas as often as they can get away with as well. not to mention the "laugh" are a stress vocalizations not a "fear tactic" or them "enjoying being evil" or what ever nonsense, can we stop painting hyenas so one sidedly negative?

I first learned the “hyenas are closer to cats than they are to dogs” fact from a Batman show
Catwomam was fighting someone who was using hyenas to attack her, and Catwomam was able to pacify them because she can like control cats or something (I know that’s not a power she has, but that’s kind of the only explanation for why the hyenas obeyed her)

Aren't wolverines and badgers mustelids, and thus caniformes, not feliformes? You're definitely right that hyenas are feliformes, though, poochyena is basically yungoos and zangoose's cousin (as much as Timon hates hyenas, he's their closest cousin in the movie).
I always figured poochyena and mightyena are dark type because they seemed made to be used by Aqua and Magma grunts. Though yeah, I could see how a hyena in general might be given the dark type.

Hi, sorry, so I've done a bit of research on Hyenas. And your highest ranking male comment is incorrect. In reality, they're matrilineal and males just happen to be the ones who leave to join new clans and find new mates. So the son of the highest ranking female will still outrank the daughter of the second highest ranking female. But any immigrant male that joined after going through puberty is at the bottom because he's no one's son.

Wouldn't be the first Pokemon to shift between species a bit when it evolves, so Poochyena being more wild dogs than hyena isn't a stretch.

Fun Fact about Hyenas; The females have a part that's referred to as a "Pseudo-penis." And because even nature can't help but stick it to the Hyenas, a Hyena giving Birth involves the baby passing through the pseudo, and splitting it. Most first time Hyena Mothers don't survive giving birth.
